Essential Energy: The neuroscience inspired skincare range by Shiseido

A couple of months ago, Shiseido released WASO, a skincare range celebrating a new approach to beauty and designed to treat the need of Millenials skin.

Shiseido’s new range “Essential Energy” will be launch globally starting January 2018.
The new range features 4 products: Moisturizing Cream 50ml, Moisturizing Gel Cream 50ml, Day Emulsion 75ml SPF30 PA+++ (Only available in Asia) and a Day Cream 50ml SPF20 (Only available in Europe, Middle East & Africa and Americas).

Essential Energy addresses a growing concern among women in their 30’s that their skin is becoming increasingly desensitized to skincare. It combines the power of science and nature:

  • ReNeura Technology™ activates the power of touch to awaken unresponsive skin and to boost the effectiveness of skincare products.
  • Ashitaba helps preserve and sustain the energy required for efficient sensory transmission.

How does it work?

The formulation heart is an Active Response Powder made of malleable spheres. These spheres will detect any skin damages and help the skin to acknowledge them.  Working in synergy, the Ashitaba fosters this sensory transmission. ReNeura Technology™ helps forge inner connections that improve skin’s ability to employ the power of skincare, bringing out lasting beauty.

 Shiseido “Essential Energy” products contain:

  • Assam Tea Extract and Pearl Extract to inhibit double carbonylation of the stratum corneum and the dermal proteins.
    • Benefits: Protects the outermost layer of the skin from oxidative stress, oxidative stress leads to skin aging and hyperpigmentation.
  • Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract to suppress oxidation of lipids.
    • Benefit: Reinforces skin barrier.
  •  Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract to promote the production of epidermal hyaluronic acid.
    • Benefits: Preserves moisture, resulting in the visible loss of firmness, pliability, and plumpness. Revitalizes skin’s outer layers so they look and feel softer, smoother, and, glowingly hydrated to instantly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Why taking selfies is bad for your skin

When ever you go outside your skin is attacked by UV or pollutants generating free radicals (super reactive molecules). These free radicals react with anything coming their way (melanin, collagen, elastin… ) and the results is quite bad:

  • Hyperpigmention
  • Premature skin aging

So far so good.

Brands have been working on this problem for quite some times and came up with efficient skin care products with high SPF, high concentration in antioxidant, etc.. to counteract the effect of UV and pollution on the skin.

article-2577824-1c2d266b00000578-36_634x499

High Energy Visible (HEV) light coming from your laptop or smartphone has been shown to generate the same amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the skin as those produced by UVA and UVB combined. The more you expose your face to your smartphone the faster your skin will age or show pigmentary irregularities.

Here are some nice skin care products for you to try out:

WASO the new skincare line for millenials by Shiseido

Last month Shiseido released its new skincare line WASO. WASO is the combination of  “WA” (sense of peaceful, harmony) and “SO” (inspiration, idea and thought).

It’s time to challenge the status quo. Drawing on its Japanese heritage, Shiseido is redefining beauty. No more gender, age, etc.. but a range for everyone.

To celebrate the new approach to beauty, WASO features five unique faces who are the brand’s ambassadors; their unique personalities and positions bring WASO’s counter-culture to life and change the perception of what’s pretty.

Shiseido picked Julian Klincewicz, whose art consistency challenges creative boundaries, to bring WASO’s vision to life. At only 21 years old , the multi-talented Klincewicz  filmed the YEEZY Season 3 presentation in Madison Square Gardens, he shot video for Gosha Rubchinskiy, Eckhaus Latta, New York band Haerts, and he recently hosted his second exhibition in Tokyo (Highsnobiety). In short, the perfect choice to embody the voice of millenials.

L’Oréal is about to sell The Body Shop

According to the Financial Times, L’Oréal is thinking about selling The Body Shop for 1 billion Euros. Eleven years ago, L’Oréal acquired The Body Shop for 652.3 Millions Pounds. Back then The Body Shop’s ethical stand was seen as an opportunity for L’Oréal to make it big on the natural cosmetic market.

However The Body Shop has been struggling for quite some time. In the first half of last year, like-for-like sales at the Body Shop fell 0.6 per cent to 398.6 Millions Euros compared with the same period the previous year. Operating losses worsened to 22.2 Millions Euros  from 7.2 Million Euros. L’Oréal is collaborating with bankers at Lazard to come up with a plan.  – The Financial Times.

In the mean time, L’Oréal just bought CeraVe, AcneFree and Ambi from Canadian pharmaceutical company Valeant for 900 Millions Euros.

Skin care trend in 2017: Probiotics

A lot has been done to protect the skin from the pollution and attacks from the environment. We have been paying attention to our pores, cells renewal rate and now it’s time to care about our Microbiota. It might gross you out but we are sharing our body space with a lovely ecological community (bacteria, fungi, and archaea). The bad news is some of them will affect your immune system and your skin’s health. The good news is a lot of them  perform tasks that are known to be useful for us.

Bye bye bad bacteria

Once again Korea and Japan are one step ahead. As part of their beauty routine, Korean women incorporated  double cleansing. The first one would remove the makeup and the second one would take care of the excess of oil, bacteria and other impurity that might be clogging your pores. According to Charlotte Cho, blogger at Soko Glam you coud also go for a triple cleanse, have a look at her 10-step Program.

If it wasn’t enough, Korea and Japan witnessed the rise of digital tools to analyse the skin. In combination with their beauty routine, some Korean women use tools to make sure their skin is at its best at any given moment.

WAY

WAY collects data from your skin and surroundings, provides skincare tips on your connected device (More info: clic here).

Unravel fragrances mysteries at Le Grand Musée du Parfum in Paris

A multi-sensory experience beyond compare

6415893_g-de-maussion-10-2d647133044-original

Guillaume de Maussion – Museum Director and co-founder (Source: le Parisien)

Located on 73 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré (Paris), emblematic street for the French luxury and art de vivre, Le Grand Musée du Parfum opened on  the 16th December 2016. It took Guillaume de Maussion and his team 2 years to complete this colossal project. This project has been supported by some key actors of the fragrance industry such as the French Syndicate of Perfumery (SFP) and International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.

The museum incorporates state of the art technologies offering a multi-sensory experience to its visitors. Inside this 19th century mansion (former headquarter of Maison Christian-Lacroix), you are introduce to the three mains chapters of perfume history. During the visit you smell around 60 fragrance raw materials.

Discover the tales of iconic raw materials and fragrances

historie-ingredient-le-grand-musee-du-parfum

I have been working in the fragrance industry for quite some time and I have to say, I learned a lot during this first part of the visit. Perfumery is an ambassador of French culture and I was delighted to find out more about its relationship with French historical figures. From Napoleon heavy cologne consumption to Marie-Antoinette affection for Eau de Roses and Eau de Violette.  During this first part of the visit, you are invited to smell iconic raw materials, some cologne  and Kyphi the first fragrance ever created by man. On the picture above, you have one example of interactive system allowing you to smell fragrances or raw materials.

For the fans of vintage and ultra-vintage, you can admire antique perfume bottles. This photo below was taken by Irene de Rosen.

Engage your senses in the scents garden

This part of the visit was quite fun. As you wander through this lovely scented garden, you are welcomed by key raw materials  (rose, jasmin, patchouli, sandalwood..) perfumers use to create their bespoke fragrances. On the left picture, you have these little balls levitating in the air like fragrance droplets. Inside of every single one of them hides a secret fragrance ingredient waiting to be smelled . As you smell it a mysterious voice coming out of the ball tells you more about it.  The picture on the right was like a journey full of memories. Each bell lights up as you get close to it, you can smell various evocative odors like lavender. I really loved the designed of this room, I felt transported on a cloud.

I didn’t talk about all the things waiting for you to be discovered. I feel like you need to explore them yourself.

A dialog with a perfumer

ellena-hommes-parfums-glowmedia

Jean-Claude Ellena – Perfumer at Hermès

This last part of the museum is dedicated to the art of the perfumer. Different perfumers share their thoughts, creative process and their inspiration. Most of the perfumes we wear on a daily basis are the result of the perfect combination of hundreds of different olfactive notes the Perfumers played with like a pianist. I had the opportunity to work with perfumers and I always found mesmerizing  their ability to identify raw materials in fragrances with such precision.
